Summer is here, and it’s, therefore, the perfect time to get body fit and improve general wellbeing by taking up some form of regular exercise, and what better way to get fit than having a splash around in the water!
The latest government guidelines recommend, to stay healthy, adults aged 19-64 should try to be active daily and should do at least 150 minutes (2 hours and 30 minutes) of moderate physical activity every week. A rule of thumb is that 1 minute of vigorous-intensity activity is about the same as 2 minutes of moderate-intensity activity. Worryingly, only a fraction of the population manages even that.
Swimming is in the top ten popular types of exercise, after walking and running in the UK. There’s probably a pool near your home or workplace or better still if you have space and budget you could consider some form of a pool or hot tub at home.
One of the biggest health benefits of swimming is that it’s non-weight bearing, which means there won’t be any strain put on muscles and joints. Swimming exercises the whole body and is an excellent way to tone up and get trim. Doing a few lengths involves most of the muscle groups. Plus increasing the pace can provide an aerobic workout. Swimming can also help with weight loss by swimming at a steady and continuous pace throughout the session. Not only does swimming help weight loss and body toning, but it can also improve balance, increase flexibility, and help relieve stress and tension.
For a gentler form of water wellness, a hot tub can offer some incredible hydrotherapy benefits. The warm water and bubbles will reduce the gravitational pull on the body, dilating the blood vessels which means less pressure on the heart, helping people to cope with stress and anxiety and giving the users body and mind time to relax. The temperature of the water will also induce perspiration which will help the body get rid of impurities and any water retention, which is an excellent way to body detox and help those people who wish to lose weight or are struggling with cellulite. The experience of using a hot tub will release the body’s natural feel-good chemicals called endorphins, which will make a person feel happy and relaxed – another factor that will help those suffering from anxiety or depression.
