This year’s SPATA conference took place on Thursday 13th October at the BSPF Offices in Andover. With an exciting, educational and varied day of content supported by a host of guest speakers.

The day started with the SPATA and BSPF review presented by SPATA’s Managing Director, Chris Hayes. Chris outlined the work that has been carried out by SPATA and the BSPF over the past year.

Sallie Golding SPATA’s PR & Marketing manager then gave an update on the many ways in which SPATA are driving trade and consumer press coverage and the initiatives that have been put in place to help members gain both on and offline publicity.  These reviews were followed by SPATA’s Chairman – Richard Carrington who presided over the AGM. Following the AGM the guest speakers began their presentations, with a range of topical and inspiring  subjects:


Making the most of British Standards Online (BSOL) – Maya Heath & Nick Butter (BSI)

maya-heath-bsolMaya joined BSI in 2007.  She has been a member of the Online Products Training Team since it was established in 2010; – originally worked as a Key Account Manager. With extensive knowledge on BSI’s online products, as well as the customers BSI serve, and a background in civil engineering, she delivers training on all online tools, including BSOL, to potential and existing BSI customers based in the UK and internationally; externally and internally, to help the most out of the systems.  If you want to learn more about our online tools, then look no further than Maya!

nick-butter-picNick has been with BSI since 2008 and started as a Regional Account Manager working on a mix of account retention and new business. In 2014 as part of a re-structure Nick joined the newly created Business Development Team with a sole focus on seeking out new customers for BSI’s range of online subscription services.  Nick works across a wide range of industries and sectors engaging with a variety of businesses and organisations from multi-nationals through to SME’s and soles traders.


How can ACAS help our industry? – Emma Webb (ACAS) Adviser/Trainer

emma-webb-acasEmma joined ACAS from a retail head office background where her role included developing and delivering specialist personal finance training for both new and existing customer facing employees and store management. Emma has extensive experience of recruitment and management and has particular knowledge and interest in equality, employee well-being and workplace mediation.  Her knowledge and experience of the day to day issues confronting employers enables her to provide advice, guidance and training which is not only soundly based but also practical and pragmatic.  Emma’s enthusiastic and informative approach makes for engaging training solutions that can be tailored to employer’s needs.  Her take on ACAS work is that it is about doing whatever it takes to help.  Whether you need a quick phone call, a visit, advice or training you should feel able to contact us and get the help you need. 


SPATA Standards, an overview – Peter Lang (Technical Adviser to SPATA)

plAs SPATA’s technical advisor, Peter is not only responsible for chairing SPATA’s technical committee but also coordinating the role of SPATA’S inspectors. He is currently revising SPATA’s standards. Peter has been the BSPF representative on EUSA technical committee (including previously being its chairman), his most recent presentation on safety devices in Qatar where he gave the UK experience to an international audience. Peter is also a Fellow of ISPE.


SPATA Standards, key changes – Patrick Thorpe (Astralpool UK)

ptDue to his wealth of knowledge gained in the swimming pool industry since the 1970’s, Patrick was the obvious choice to represent SPATA on the relevant UK committee and more recently in Europe developing the domestic swimming pool standards. This work has been ongoing for the past 5 years and have seen the development of 3 standards for EN 16582 (construction and installation) and 3 standards due out for Final Vote on EN 16713 (pool water circulation, filtration and treatment).
