Inspiration from the ‘Best of British’ pool and spa companies is on hand, as the winners of the 2016 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards have been revealed during SPATEX (the annual pool, spa and wellness trade show), a celebration of everything that is great about the wet leisure and wellness industry.

The 2016 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards hosted by The British and Irish Spa and Hot Tub Association (BISHTA) and the Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association (SPATA), were rebranded in 2015, but the first SPATA awards were won in 1978, with the BISHTA awards first being won in 2008! These well-established awards are the UK’s number one wet leisure industry recognised accolades and bring the two UK industry trade associations together at a joint event, showcasing the wet leisure industry with the best examples of design, construction, installation and innovation.

Big winners of the night were Cresta Leisure, who won ‘The Dick Millward Trophy for Pool Contactor of the Year. Also celebrating were Hydropool UK, who picked up seven BISHTA awards and Tanby Pools who equalled that achievement by winning seven SPATA awards. Oyster Pools & Leisure also won eight awards across BISHTA and SPATA including the Peter Geekie Award for Retail Excellence. Aqua-Blue Designs and David Hallam submitted a joint entry and won the SPATA award for Pool of the Year.

Chris Hayes, Managing Director of both BISHTA and SPATA, says, “We congratulate all of the winners of this year’s. British Pool & Hot Tub Awards. BISHTA represents 111 specialist hot tub companies, and SPATA represents 173 Pool companies. We set a high standard for our judges from across both the pool and spa industry to score each entry on visual impression and technical merit. This means that an award won at the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards is very well deserved, and ownership of at least one award stands as a strong endorsement to consumers of the standard of work a winning company offers. Each year, the outstanding quality of submissions creates stiff competition.

The high quality of the entries provides a fantastic opportunity for showcasing what our members can do for their customers and reinforces why it is so important to choose a BISHTA or SPATA member to turn a dream into a winning project. The publicity generated from the awards evening helps to promote consumer awareness, to generate demand for products and services to kick start the new year. There is the added bonus that BISHTA and SPATA winners are also eligible to be entered into the EUSA European Pool and Spa Awards”.

The awards evening is held alongside SPATEX, the UK’s biggest Pool, Spa and Wellness Show, an event that sees companies from across the UK and overseas, gather to exhibit their finest products and services, along with promoting themselves and networking with colleagues. Each year the UK’s number one international swimming pool and spa exhibition, SPATEX provides a platform for all sectors of the wet leisure industry from pools, spas, saunas to hydrotherapy, steam rooms and children’s play equipment, in both the domestic and commercial arena. Primarily a trade Show, it also welcomes members of the public. As the longest established and leading event for the wet leisure sector, SPATEX provides a unique annual opportunity for you to come and meet the experts, all under one roof.

SPATEX is the UK’s largest and longest running dedicated swimming pool, spa and wellness exhibition, and the next show will be celebrating its 21st anniversary in the Jaguar Exhibition Hall, at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry from Tuesday 31st January to Thursday 2nd February 2017. Visit www.spatex.co.uk for more details.

Chris Hayes commented further, “This year the 20th show exceeded our expectations, having sold out much earlier than expected. Once again, this has led to the show expanding the size and in the third year of being in Coventry, this is an incredible achievement by the SPATEX team. The Ricoh Arena offers purpose-built facilities, which have given us the opportunity to make the show even bigger and better for our exhibitors and visitors and our plan is to continue with this expansion in the coming years.”

Whether or not you can get to SPATEX, if you are a pool or spa owner looking to refurbish or upgrade, a customer looking to buy a pool, spa or hot tub, a designer or company looking to find a specialist in the wet leisure industry, the UK wet leisure trade associations can provide advice and guidance to assist you. BISHTA and SPATA, have created and established the standards by which pools and spas should be built and hot tubs installed. Members also abide by a Code of Ethics. Choose a BISHTA or SPATA member, to provide peace of mind. Find your nearest member and view the full gallery of British Pool & Hot Tub Award winners at; www.bishta.co.uk and www.spata.co.uk

Britain’s Finest Pools and Hot Tubs Revealed

 Awards Banner eshot 2015 V2

As the summer warms the gardens of Britain, people habitually move their lives outside – and if you ever needed an incentive to enjoy an alfresco lifestyle the winning entries from this year’s British Pool & Hot Tub Awards, hosted by the UK Trade associations BISHTA and SPATA, provide a fabulous taste of what the UK’s world of wet leisure has on offer, reaching new heights in design and technology.

The British and Irish Spa and Hot Tub Association (BISHTA) and the Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association (SPATA) are the relevant trade associations upholding standards for pools and spas within the industry.

These annual awards highlight the achievements of the wet leisure industry, by showcasing the best examples of design, construction, installation and innovation – and they provide the perfect gallery for consumers to pick their dream project from trade association approved companies.
Chris Hayes, Managing Director of both BISHTA and SPATA, says, “We congratulate all the winners of the BISHTA and SPATA Awards this year.  BISHTA represents over 100 specialist hot tub companies across the British Isles and SPATA represents in excess of 170 companies. As we set our standards high for both trade associations, the award winners keep coming up with even more fabulous entries!  The outstanding quality of submissions, this year has certainly created some stiff competition, making it a difficult job for the judges in determining who should receive what level of Award! The high quality of the entries will aid us in showcasing what our members can do for their customers and why it is so important to choose a BISHTA or SPATA member to turn your dreams into reality”.

The quality of the 2015 winning entries are clearly outstanding. Each project generates the lifestlye aspiration of a holiday or spa feel in home or garden. And whilst some of the winning projects represent the high-end of the industry, owning this kind of facility needn’t cost the earth. According to industry data, the running costs of a standard hot tub range from a variable £1 – £1.50 per day (depending on outside temperature and amount of time used), and an indoor domestic pool at about £7.50 per day, compared with about £5 per day for an outdoor pool. Its not surprising then that an ever increasing number of people are looking to splash out on the ‘health and wellness at home’ trend.

Teach everyone to swim; it could just save their life!

Teach everyone to swim

Lets teach everyone to swim.  SPATA, the Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association, promotes swimming as both a leisure activity and a great form of exercise. They know that swimming has so many benefits, so they have some simple tips to help you keep safe.

Teach everyone to swim. With a warm summer predicted this year, there is nothing quite like getting out and swimming in a pool, but if you do not have access to one, then the countryside can be an enjoyable way to relax and make the most of the warm weather by the water. However, whether it’s with friends or family, in a pool at home or abroad or enjoying a picnic by a river or swimming in a lake, it’s always important to keep safe.

Teach everybody to swim!
Under the National Curriculum, all children by the age of 11 years should be able to swim 25 metres unaided, ensuring they have some knowledge of safety in the water. It is always good to have competent swimmers at hand who can swim to an emergency if need be. Where possible, use a swim school so that your children can learn to swim correctly and safely. Key swimming organisations include www.sta.co.uk or www.britishswimming.org

Being able to swim from an early age can open the door to incredible experiences, time spent at a swim class as a child can bring years of new opportunities as you grow and develop. The ability to swim competently is essential for any water sports from diving, canoeing, jet skiing, snorkelling, rowing, kitesurfing and wakeboarding…….the list goes on! And this essential life skill can be a regret for many adults who don’t learn swim skills early in life!

Around 400 people needlessly drown in the UK every year and thousands more suffer injury, some life changing, through near-drowning experiences. Putting this into context, one person dies every 20 hours in the UK. Drowning is also the third highest cause of accidental death of children in the UK. So the need for children (and adults) to be competent and confident in and around water is essential.

To raise awareness of the importance of water safety, Drowning Prevention Week (20th -28th June 2015), the national campaign of drowning prevention charity the Royal Life Saving Society UK, aims to cut down the number of drowning and near drowning incidences that happen in the UK every year.

SPATA offers tips on staying safe in and around water;

1. Always check the depth of the water.
Shallow water can deepen suddenly, therefore if you are not a strong swimmer you should not swim out of your depth and set clear boundaries about where you will swim. Also don’t jump or dive into water that you cannot see the bottom of, even if you swim there regularly. Rocks and debris could have moved in flowing water that will make it unsafe.
2. Look out for weeds.
One or two weeds aren’t uncommon in slow flowing water, but a spaghetti-like forest can entangle a swimmer’s legs. Try to avoid them. If you do encounter some, slow your swim speed right down and either float using your arms to paddle or turn around slowly.
3. Watch out for strong currents.
The best water has flowing currents and therefore you should be careful to judge the strength of the current to asses if you are a strong enough swimmer to deal with it. Always think about your escape route if you do get washed downstream.
4. Don’t swim alone.
People should ideally swim where there are others to supervise them, as this may reduce the risk of drowning, as there will be someone to rescue or raise an alarm if a swimmer gets into difficulty.

SPATA tips to help you Dive into summer

With the heat of British Summer Time on the horizon, the UK Wet Leisure Trade Associations SPATA and BISHTA offer advice for adding some healthy water fun to your garden.

With tastes of the weather getting warmer and brighter, we can start to prepare for the summer months and consider some garden improvements. As well as the annual garden tidy up, it could be time to consider a hot tub, swim spa or even a new swimming pool, to make the most of being at home.

Outdoor activity is great for family fun and getting children out in the fresh air rather than being stuck indoors. Swimming and other water-related activities are an easy and fun way for families to spend time together and is also a great way to encourage children to be sporty and fit from a young age.

Adding something as eye catching as a swimming pool or hot tub can create a holiday feel to the garden and create a relaxing environment for entertaining. Best of all, they can be tailored to suit your house and garden design, and to fit every budget.

The Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association (SPATA) and The British and Irish Spa and Hot Tub Association (BISHTA) are the respective trade associations for swimming pools and hot tubs which encourage these contractors and suppliers to meet industry standards and to make usage safe.

Top tips when buying a hot tub and/or swimming pool:

1)            Always choose a SPATA or BISHTA member so that you can be assured that your purchase will be built to industry standards. You may wish to check the company is a current member of either BISHTA and / or SPATA by contacting the office, or checking the relevant website (details below).

2)            Be sure you know what you want to use the equipment for, as this will determine what to buy? If you just want to relax in some hot water then a Hot Tub may be best, but if you want to swim, then either a swim spa or a swimming pools will be better

3)            Set a budget, but be prepared to be flexible if you find something that meets all your needs, but is slightly more than you had hoped for

4)            Ensure the contractor / supplier can show other examples of the type of hot tub or pool that you want. Ask past clients for their feedback on the contractors’ professionalism and ability to hit agreed deadlines

5)            Find out if there are any Local Authority consents required (e.g. Planning, Building Regulations, etc.)

6)            Ask who will be responsible for after-sales maintenance, service and check the warranties on the products

7)            Find out what method of water treatment is proposed

Adding fun, accessories and optional extras

You want your pool to be as comfortable and attractive as possible, and there is an enormous selection of enhancements and labour-saving devices available on the market. These range from underwater lighting, automatic water top-up, counter current machines and automatic cleaners to diving boards, slides, special deck finishes and poolside furniture. Research what is available and choose the accessories and extras which suit your lifestyle to help you make best use of your investment.

And finally

A well planned and installed pool, swim spa or hot tub, will give years of pleasure to you, your family and friends and bring great health and enjoyment. Go on – take the plunge! Visit: www.spata.co.uk and/or www.bishta.co.uk and take the first step to making your dream a reality!

Shape-Up for Summer with Water Wellness

BISHTA & SPATA offer helpful tips to maximise your water fun

for fitness and good health

dreamstime_l_24069724

We’ve made it through the winter and the days are gradually getting lighter and warmer, which can mean only one thing – summer is on its way! It’s, therefore, the perfect time to spruce up and improve your general fitness by taking up some form of regular exercise, and what better way to get fit than having a splash around in the water!

The latest government guidelines recommend, to stay healthy, adults aged 19-64 should try to be active daily and should do at least 150 minutes (2 hours and 30 minutes) of moderate physical activity every week. A rule of thumb is that 1 minute of vigorous-intensity activity is about the same as 2 minutes of moderate-intensity activity.  Worryingly, only a fraction of the population manages even that.

Swimming is in the top ten popular types of exercise, after walking and running in the UK. There’s probably a pool near your home or workplace or better still if you have the space and budget you could consider some form of pool or hot tub at home.

One of the biggest health benefits of swimming is that it’s non-weight bearing, which means you won’t be putting any strain on muscles and joints. Swimming exercises the whole body and is an excellent way to tone up and get trim. Doing a few lengths involves most of the muscle groups. If you increase the pace, you’ll get an aerobic workout too. Swimming can also help you lose weight if you swim at a steady and continuous pace throughout the session. You could also join a swimming club or sign up for pool workout sessions, such as aqua aerobics. Not only does swimming help you lose weight and tone up, but it can also improve balance, increase flexibility, and help relieve stress and tension.

If you prefer a gentler form of water wellness, a hot tub can offer some incredible hydrotherapy benefits. The warm water and bubbles will reduce the gravitational pull of your body, dilating the blood vessels which means less pressure on your heart, helping you cope with stress and anxiety and giving your body and mind time to relax. The temperature of the water will also induce perspiration which will help your body get rid of impurities and any water retention, which is an excellent way to detox your body and help those people who wish to lose weight or are struggling with cellulite. The experience of using a Hot Tub will release the body’s natural feel-good chemicals called endorphins, which will make a person feel happy and relaxed – another factor that will help those suffering from anxiety or depression.

The Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association (SPATA) and the British and Irish Spa and Hot Tub Association (BISHTA) have joined force to promote the health benefits that water wellness can bring. BISHTA has begun with a ‘Happiness is a Hot Tub’ Campaign, which launches in April. It all starts with a photo competition where people are invited to share their Hot Tub Selfie photos for a chance to win a prize and their winning image to front the campaign. Entries to the competition will be shared on the BISHTA website (www.bishta.co.uk) and Facebook page (/PoolsHotTubs) with the hashtag #Happinessisahottub.

Wet Leisure Industry Survey Results 2014

Now in its fourth year, the Wet Leisure Industry Survey results are in. Once again with the help and support of the British Swimming Pool Federation (BSPF), the report, researched and produced by Golden Coast (http://goldenc.co/) gave wet leisure companies across the UK the opportunity to share their feedback either by post or online. The survey pulls together statistics and insights that give us all a better picture of the industry that we work in. The first statistic is a rather encouraging one. Once again we received more responses this year than the year before. In fact, the number of businesses that have taken the time to fill in the survey has increased by over 75% since the survey began. The survey also allows people to share their own views of the industry in their own words.

New Year’s Resolution Number One: Treat Yourself Better!

Whether swimming in a swimming pool or lounging in a hot tub of your very own, it starts with the right choice. The UK wet leisure trade associations SPATA and BISHTA are on hand to help!

TANBYWEBOnce again it’s time to make a New Year’s resolution, so this year, why not take up an activity that’s truly beneficial.

The Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association (SPATA)  the trade association for swimming pools are encouraging the UK to start their new year getting water active!

Owning a swimming pool provides the chance to get fit in the water and stay active throughout the year. The winter months are the perfect time for researching and planning a new home addition, which would mean a dream pool, could be installed before the summer.

For those looking for something to soothe limbs and muscles or are working with space limitations, a hot tub or combination swim spa may be more fitting.

With the increased popularity of hot tubs in the UK, weighing up the options of exercise over hydrotherapy may be a consideration…pool, hot tub or both?

The thought of relaxing in a hot tub at home is an excellent idea, but your children may be rooting for a pool? Hot tub or pool — it’s a difficult choice. Before coming to a decision, be sure to weigh all the pros and cons. Careful planning is essential when  thinking of landscaping a back garden with this type of specialty installation. Either way, it’s a challenging project to tackle, but help is on hand from SPATA and BISHTA (the British and Irish Spa and Hot Tub Association).

Each year SPATA and BISHTA showcase the very best swimming pools, hot tubs, and swim spas with the British Pool and Hot Tub Awards. The awards take place at SPATEX the UK’s number one swimming pool and spa exhibition with over one hundred exhibitors, from the UK and abroad, SPATEX brings together under one roof, the country’s largest showcase of new products and innovations. The show represents all sectors of the wet leisure industry, including saunas, hydrotherapy, steam rooms and children’s play equipment, in both the domestic and commercial arena. Primarily a trade show, it also welcomes members of the public from Sunday 1st to Tuesday 3rd February 2015.

There’s a solution for every budget and the security of purchase which comes from buying from a SPATA or BISHTA member, who follow standards of practice and a code of ethics.

So why not kickoff  the New Year with a resolution to treat yourself better? Whatever your age there is no denying that water brings a lifetime of enjoyment!

Keeping Your Children Safe In and Around Water This Summer

As Britain basks in warm weather, SPATA encourages parents to ensure their children swim safely at home and abroad.

With temperatures on the rise this month and the summer holidays just around the corner, British parents are choosing to spend family time entertaining their children outdoors at water venues, such as public pools, lido’s and water parks.

SPATA swim pool girl SMLSPATA (The Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association) is encouraging all pool users to play safe in the warm weather and to avoid any danger, while playing near water.

Swimming is an easy and fun way for families to spend time together and keep active and it is an excellent way to encourage children to be sporty and fit from a young age. However, being more active in the pool also means being more safety conscious, whether it is in your back garden, at your local pool or on holiday abroad.

Suggestions for safety in and around the pool:

1.         Learn to swim

2.         Always supervise children in and around the pool

3.         Only dive into water that is designated for this purpose

4.         Ensure family and friends know what to do in an emergency

5.         Never swim in unsupervised areas such as old flooded quarry pits, rivers, canals and reservoirs.

Five Essential Safety Items for Children:

  • Buoyancy aids are designed to give a degree of independence, but these must be used under strict supervision. Available as arm bands, swim vests and float boards.
  • Baby swim seats let the baby sit supported in the water, so that they are able to kick freely.
  • Costumes with pockets that contain removable floats designed for children 30 months and over.
  • Swim shoes protect children’s feet from slipping on wet floors or stubbing toes against the edge of the pool.
  • One-piece water suits for children; give young skin a protection factor of 50+ wet or dry.

In the summer months, spending a full day by the pool is a wonderful way to enjoy time with your family, but be aware of the effects of the sun. Use waterproof sun lotion and ensure that young children are covered up. Watch out for signs of sunstroke and make sure everyone drinks plenty of water and spends time in the shade.

The Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association (SPATA) , provides consumers with a trusted source of information on swimming pool ownership with direct links to its members and free consumer guidance resources via SPATA. SPATA members are committed to providing customers with a first-class service.

The Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association (SPATA ) and The British and Irish Spa and Hot Tub Association (BISHTA) are the respective trade associations for swimming pools and hot tubs / swim spas in the UK, setting the standards for contractors and suppliers.
